WHY THE NORTHERN REGION REMAINS A MAJOR ADVANTAGE TO WINNING THE PRESIDENCY IN NIGERIA
The Hausa Fulani political system is founded on conservative foundations that culminate into giving them the notion of being born to rule (motto-Kano State). Of course, it’s never their fault or maybe? One of the mistakes can be traced to the colonial era – masters who took the opportunity and masterminded a strategy to make use of the centralized system of government during the pre-colonial period — leaving them with no chance for educational, unlike the western states.
History has made us know that from the “real” beginning, the Fulanis were not seen as a typical Hausa tribe, they were only herders, whom their historical antecedent may have suggested that the hailed from the lost tribe of Israel, who wandered around till they got to Africa. Consequently, to increase the population of this tribe, the British had no much choice but to bring these two tribes (Hausa and Fulani) together as one, marking them to occupy the largest area of land – this marked the beginning of the Hausa-Fulani power intoxication.
During the struggle for the Nigeria independence in the late 50s when the likes of Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Anthony Enahoro returned to their country after been espoused to knowledge outside the country and having studied law, the northern elders suggested that “Nigeria is not ready for independence.” However, the Western elders never stopped in agitating for the freedom of Nigeria.
The centralized system was such that the Emir or Sarduana is portrayed as the political and the religious head and the supreme and central authority in the northern region, and by this till this day hardly can a typical Hausa man go against the order of their leader. This hit was significant for the British Colonial masters who made themselves friends to the northern elders and giving them the notion of the only tribe “born to always rule the country.”
Why do Nigerians comically say “Ibo Kano” – this is a reflection of the population, where a Hausa man marries many wives, not putting into consideration how to cater for them, especially if it is a male child (they mostly believe female child is more profitable than the male when given a hand in marriage). This concept has made these wandering children to earn themselves a name – the Almajiris.
The Nigeria political system is sourced from the northern region, turning the opportunity or chance to rule this country a privilege for the Westerners or Easterners. A typical example can be seen from the military coups that had taken place in Nigeria, mostly initiated by the Hausas.
Now at this time, the battle for the presidency is between two northern men who are in the struggle to take hold of the centralized system of government that fictionally looks like a federal structure in the states of the north. Kano and Kaduna states remain a stronghold that needs a tactical approach by the players.
The menace of the political system is wrecking the ship of Nationalism in Nigeria. This problem is not only working now but is bound to remain for a long time.
